53 Extra: Senegal's Duggy T rules his roost
Duggy T is a socio-political activist who passes his message on through the only medium he knows best, Music
Christened Amadou Barry, he is more popularly known by his moniker, Duggy T. A singer, song writer, hip hop head and producer with decades of knowledge and craft under his belt; it is no wonder that this gentleman and socio-political activist strikes a very popular figure, not just in his community; but across the country.
He started out as a beat boxer and break dancer (both facets of the hip hop culture), so the natural progression to rapping was almost a default setting. He co-founded the hip hop group PBS (Positive Black Soul) with Dj Awadi in 1989 and the dynamic duo has since shared international stages with the likes of French rapper Mc Solaar, American hip hop king KRS One, and Baaba Maal who was so impressed with the duo, he literally sought them out for a collaboration, and got them a rcording deal in the process too.
Duggy T’s resume is one that reads like an encyclopaedia on music collaborations. Alongside his partner Dj Awadi, they both featured on the Fela Kuti tribute album; doing a retake on the late great Fela Kuti’s “No Agreement” which had Res, Tony Allen, Ray Lema, Archie Shepp and Baaba Maal.
Since 2002, Duggy T and Dj Awadi have both been pushing their solo projects which has seen Duggy release 3 solo albums to date and he is currently working on another album which promises to bring the quality and sincerity his adorning fans have grown to like from the legendary singer, song writer, producer, socio-political activist and all round nice guy.
Catch Duggy T as he chats about his musical journey and inspirations on #AM53Extra tonight (monday) at 22:30.
