Sometimes a song becomes especially memorable for a certain reason or season. It may be the first song you heard the day you got your dream job, the first song you and your crush danced to on your first date, or, as in the case of our Nigerian Idol contestants, the songs that ruled the airwaves the year they were born!

This Sunday, our Nigerian Idol contestants get to relive the joy of their birth years with us by performing those songs on the Live Show stage.

Akunna

‘How Do I Live’ by LeAnn Rhimes

With hits like 'Return of the Mack' by Mark Morrison, 'No Diggity' by Black Street, and 'It's All Coming Back to Me Now' by Celine Dion, 1997 was a good year for music. One stood out in particular for Akunna and it was ‘How Do I Live’ by LeAnn Rhimes – and it makes perfect sense because how really would we have lived if we never got to see Akunna’s amazing performances every Sunday? This single peaked at number 2 on the. Billboard charts and we look forward to Akunna giving it the rendition it deserves.

Beyonce

‘Unfaithful’ by Rihanna

In 2006, we shook our hips to ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ by Shakira and we brought ‘Sexy Back’ thanks to Justin Timberlake. One more song that ruled the airwaves and is pretty special to Beyonce is Rihanna's 'Unfaithful' from her second studio album A Girl Like Me, released in 2006. This Sunday, Beyonce performs this hit single and we are super stoked to see how well she covers it.

Comfort

‘Beautiful’ by Christina Aguilera

Back in 2002, if we weren't getting caught up in a 'Dilemma' with Nelly and Kelly, we were asking 'What's Luv? ', alongside Fat Joe and Ashanti.’ But during the times when we really needed to hear it the most, Christina Aguilera’s ‘Beautiful’ came on to remind us how beautiful we are and how words can’t bring us down. It’s no wonder that apart from being the song of her birth year, the lyrics must really mean a lot to Comfort. We can’t wait for Sunday as she reminds us how beautiful we all are with this amazing song.

Daniel

‘All The Things Your Man Won't Do’ by Joe Thomas

Hol' Up! Who turned up the heat? Back in 1996, this song from Joe’s second studio album All That I Am gave us the chills (in a good way, of course). If you lost the love of your life to someone back then, this was probably the song being whispered in their ears. This Sunday, Daniel is intent on bringing back the tingles with the song that set the airwaves on fire during his birth year. Can he ignite the heat during the Live Show? Time will tell.

Emmanuel

Kiss From A Rose’ by Seal

Okay, back-to-back heat! We are clearly in for an intense Live Show this Sunday. This 1994 hit from Seal’s second album and soundtrack to Batman Forever ruled the 90s, topping charts in numerous countries and winning several awards including the Grammys ‘Record of The Year’. Daniel has his task cut out for him as he performs this song this Sunday.

Faith

‘You Are Not Alone’ by Michael Jackson

If you love 90s music, then 1995 should be on your list of favourite years. With hits like ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ by Coolio, ‘Waterfalls’ by TLC, ‘Freak Like Me’ by Adina Howard and of course, the icon, MJ with ‘You Are Not Alone.’ Faith will be performing the latter – and question is, will he be alone after his performance, or will Team Faith rally around him and remind him he will never be alone on his quest for the Nigerian Idol crown?

Francis

‘Please Forgive Me’ by Bryan Adams

Released in 1993, this single by Bryan Adams from his compilation album So Far So Good went on to peak at number 7 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Francis picks this as the song to celebrate his year of birth and we can’t wait to see his rendition at the Live Show.

Kingdom

‘Unbreak My Heart’ by Toni Braxton

Another classic by Toni Braxton recorded in 1996 that we totally recommend to hurting lovers is Kingdom’s ‘Year of Birth’ song choice. This single is from Toni Braxton’s second studio album, ‘Secrets’ and we have high expectations for Kingdom’s delivery this Sunday.

Our Nigerian Idol contestants sure do have amazing year of birth songs and we know we’ll love every moment watching them perform.  Don’t miss it!
