Cleo Koheirwe’s star keeps rising!

Get to know more about Uganda’s mulch-talented Cleopatra Koheirwe who recently launched her single Party on my Mind. Cleo has also worked on big productions like The Last King of Scotland in 2006 which starred Hollywood great Forest Whitaker.

She is also a radio show host, writer and motivational speaker! This is quite an impressive CV and seemingly Cleo’s star is set to keep rising and shining!

What projects are you working on currently?

Musically, I am working on my first solo album; I have a single out titled Party on My Mind. It has also premiered in Kenya. It has been well received so far. I write most of my songs. I am a radio presenter at RadioCity 97FM co-hosting the drive time show called The Jam from 15:00-19:00 every Monday to Friday.

I am also a Goodwill Ambassador for an NGO called Reach a Hand Uganda which aims at motivating and inspiring the youth. We go to primary and secondary schools, some universities too and speak to them about career choices, decision making, sex, drugs, HIV, education and more.

Cleopatra is currently signed to Kenyan music label, Cypher Studios. Iam a contributor for health and sanitation magazine called Fresh.

Having acted on big productions like The Last King of Scotland and AfricaMagic Entertainment’s Changes, what would you say you prefer; acting for block busters or the small screen?

I love acting! Be it on the big screen, small screen, theater—I love acting. If the script is great, I will be more than glad to act in it.

You were a nominee for the Pearl Film festival Awards 2012, for the best supporting actress—how does it feel to be appreciated by industry peers?

It is encouraging! I feel appreciated and it reminds me that I am doing something right. I feel happy and nervous at the same time because that means people’s expectations of me go higher. This makes me push myself harder in the next projects I am chosen for.

My first film nomination was in 2011 for Best actress in a TV Drama at the Kalasha Film & Television Awards in Kenya. I felt so glad that Kenyans were acknowledging my work and acting skills. There is a lot more competition and acting opportunities in Kenya than in Uganda.

Still on awards….Do you ever dream of one day of walking away with the best female actress award at the Academy Awards (Oscars)?YES I DO! I hope to make it to Hollywood someday, get into more film projects and one of my roles will earn me a nomination and win. I have this dream and I pray it comes true.

What industry tips would you give to a budding actor or actress wanting to make it big?

Be focused, have self-confidence, be willing to learn and listen, adapt to change, keep to time and always know your lines by heart. Make them personal and meaningful to you because it makes the work easier and respect everyone on set.

What do you think your fellow countrymen Jannette and Kyle’s chances are on Big Brother StarGame, of walking away with the prize money of USD 300 000?

Considering what I have heard and read about Janette and Kyle, I think they have a 50/50 chance to walk away with the prize money. There are other housemates proving to be stronger than they are so they need to work really harder. Let them not only try to be interesting sexually but also intellectually. This BBA game is unpredictable. I wish them the best.

Given the opportunity would you enter or be part of a reality TV show?

A few years ago, I would have, but now, no. I would not want to miss the outside world for three months or more considering all I have going on at the moment. I think I would go crazy. Although one can never say “never” so you never know. Haha! For now, I will continue being the audience, it is more fun.
